The Head Librarian of the Music Library and Archive of Recorded Sound provides a full range of high-quality library services for the faculty and students of the Department of Music and to other interested faculty, students, and staff of the University. The Head Librarian is also a member of the management team responsible for humanities and area studies collections in the Stanford University Libraries. In addition to advanced subject expertise in music and sound recordings, the Head Librarian must have proven managerial ability and be capable of contributing to the programs and projects of the Libraries in general as well as to the University.

* Plans, develops, and manages programs of the Music Library and Archive of Recorded Sound and their collections within the framework of the University Libraries' policies and the needs of Stanford faculty and students.
* Manages and evaluates the staff of the Music Library and Archive of Recorded Sound.
* Oversees and manages the budget of the Music Library and Archive of Recorded Sound.
* Selects music materials in coordination with the Music Bibliographer for the Stanford University Libraries.
* Works with Stanford University Libraries staff to provide collections of digital materials in the form of music and sound recordings.
* Oversees the Music Technical Services unit, which is responsible for the acquisition of scores and sound recordings and for the cataloging of all music materials (except serials) for the University Libraries.
* Maintains close contact with the faculty to coordinate their research and instructional needs with library and archival resources and programs.
* Oversees and contributes to reference, research assistance, and bibliographic instruction in music and participates in the Stanford University Libraries programs of bibliographic instruction. Coordinates and contributes to the preparation of music resource home pages for the Stanford Libraries’ web site.
* Teaches a graduate course in music bibliography and research methods. Provides instruction on library resources and research methods to undergraduate music majors as needed.
* Stays abreast of current developments in music librarianship and sound archives through active participation in appropriate professional organizations.
* Stays au courant of current scholarly developments, particularly in the sources, methodologies, and theoretical approaches in the various sub-disciplines of musicology, music theory, and performance practice, including those that involve digital methods for analysis, presentation, collaboration, and communication. Understands the uses or potential applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, linked data, and similar tools.
* Represents the Music Library in the Public Services Department and contributes to that group's planning, policy, and process. Serves on Library committees and manages library projects as appropriate or assigned.
* Participates as appropriate in the development activities of the Libraries, working closely with the Library Development Officer and the Associate University Librarian for Public Services and Collection Development. Encourages and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and materials relating to music collections.
Education & Experience:
* MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent in training and experience are desirable. Advanced graduate work in the field of music or musicology is required; a Ph.D. is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Substantial knowledge of and/or experience in academic or research libraries and university research environments are required.
* Strong subject competence in music, musicology, and understanding of collection development in academic or research libraries.
* Knowledge and experience of archival description and arrangement, and basic principles and techniques of conservation and preservation, as they apply to documents, sound recordings, and other media materials.
* Demonstrated professional accomplishments relevant to the responsibilities of this position are required. These may include scholarly publications, teaching experience, and library-related publications and presentation.
* Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and management skills. Salary and appointment level commensurate with years of experience leading an organization (e.g. library, department, orchestra, choir).
* Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with library staff as well as with faculty and students is required. Ability to perform effectively in and contribute successfully to a diverse workplace environment is also required.
* Evidence of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, is required.
* Reading knowledge of German, Italian or French is highly desirable.
For consideration at the Librarian 3 level:
PhD in music, musicology, or related field or advanced degree in Library Science and advanced degree in music, musicology, or related field with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and five years of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.
For consideration at the Librarian 4 level:
PhD in music, musicology, or related field or advanced degree in Library Science and advanced degree in music, musicology, or related field with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and ten years of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization, demonstrating a high level of expertise and active engagement in their area of specialization at a national level or a combination of education and relevant experience.
* Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
* Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
* Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
* Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
* Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.
