Please join us for an informal discussion about future Basement Tapes Day
events on Monday, July 13, at 7pm (Eastern) via Zoom!
The next Basement Tapes Day will be a 'hybrid' event in Los Angeles, as
part of the LA Archives Bazaar on October 17, 2020. The plan is to host the
8-hour event over Zoom as a mix of both live and pre-recorded segments. A
few weeks before the event, participants will be invited to drop off their
tapes, have them digitized and sent back to them, listen to the files, and
record their reactions to be shared throughout the day of the event. A
limited number of people will also be able to schedule a time to visit the
location where the Zoom is being broadcast from, one at a time, to hear
their tapes live. In between these segments, we will share pre-taped
presentations on topics such as the history of recorded sound, tape
handling and care, and band demo/mix tapes.
If you are interested in planning a Basement Tapes Day in your area (either
in conjunction with the L.A. event in October or sometime in the future),
if you would like to volunteer or have an idea for a pre-taped
presentation, or if you are just curious about the event, we would love to
see you on July 13! Please RSVP with an email to [log in to unmask],
and we'll send you the Zoom info.
Best,
Miles Levy and Yuri Shimoda

Basement Tapes Day provides the public with access to vintage audio
playback devices so they can listen to the home recordings on open-reel
tapes, cassettes, and micro-cassettes that have been sitting in their
attics or basements for years. The annual event is staffed by volunteers
from the audio preservation community — archivists, engineers, collectors,
restoration experts, conservators, and graduate students in local
media archival studies programs. Attendees can hear and publicly share
their tapes, while learning about the history of recorded sound, common
deterioration issues with magnetic audio formats, and how to best store and
care for their collections.
