While I can certainly understand this point of view, the problem is actually
not record labels as much as it is the artists and their managers. Every
experienced manager has sat in a sales, promotion or programming meeting and
watched any recording that wasn't as loud as the others tending to end up in
the wastebasket as the merits of the week's new releases was discussed.
Paranoia of not being loud enough to get noticed is most, if not all of
what's driving this. The only solution I can see is for more established
artists to simply step up, take the lead, and stop doing it because they no
longer need to get noticed.
