Brilliant, Tom! I think that you've really figured out archiving of magnetic
sources.
As for the idea that started this whole discussion, namely playing back
magnetic media on modern equipment, I'd just like to say that nobody objects
to using modern playback equipment for ancient disk and cylinder sources. In
fact, nobody, save for Nimbus, even suggests using vintage playback
equipment for such sources, even if the original producers may have been
working toward a specific sound at the time of the recording. In these
cases, it's obviously that the "specific sound" was limited by the
producers' expectations from the equipment at the time. That's why Tom's
idea of making a precise digital replica of the source material makes so
much sense. If that original intended sound is desired, it can be produced
digitally, without limiting the results of future restorations.
