Well, of course, but in practice, at least here at NYPL, where we're
processing digital files from individual creators in every format from
7-inch floppies to full hard drives, it's very unusual, in fact pretty much
unheard of, for people to create checksums for their born-digital records
before we acquire them. We simply create MD5 and SHA1 upon ingest. In the
future we hope to work with creators before they donate their material and
create checksums before the stuff is transferred to us, but this is a
long-term plan that can't easily be applied to obsolete media anyway.
