A problem with Edison vertical cuts is the rumble. I have tried a solution
that seems to work. I use a Pickering tone arm that has a very low mass
assembly to hold the cartridge. I found that playing an Edison slow at 331/3
would degrade the bass response of the record unless I introduced a
temporary modification by adding a small weight (a dime) to increase the
mass of the cartridge, adjusting the balance spring to give normal tracking
pressure. The added mass allows a slow transfer. At slow speed, the
cartridge is allowed to follow the irregularities reducing the rumble and it
seems to make the stylus track the record far better.
I am working on a three disc set of Edison Dance bands from 1915 - 1928 from
Diamond Discs and one Needle Cut from B.A.Rolfe - Usually one example from
each band as I have quite a few Edison records.
I intend to post a list of the tracks when I've finalized the track
list-Mickey
