Thanks everybody for various messages - much appreciated!
I arrive by plane in Washington DC on the 1st of May and have thus some 
6 days to spare prior to the conference. Following my nose with the aid 
of a rental car and GPS ....
It seems to me that, in the US, there are no reliable and independent 
hotel and restaurant guides. We are blessed in Europe with several 
reputable guides, including Michelin.
My problem is to find THE best fine dining places. And since we talk 
about the east coast seafood would have been an obvious choice? But any 
other suggestions are most welcome.
And other places to see and visit, such as museums and private 
collections, antique fairs, spectacular views,...
I have never been in that region before and am determined to enjoy myself
