I have one of the later NAKs, a Cassette Deck 1 which I had serviced by B&W
(authorised UK service) when I bought it. Dual Caps manual azimuth (which I
prefer to auto - I'd rather trust my ears than a computer chip!).
Ridiculously quiet and makes stunningly good quality transfers. Once you go
Nak you never go back!

Lou and list,
Thanks for mentioning the Nak DR-1. I was just about to chime in on this
discussion in that regard > let's call it *a new thread on the lower priced
Nakamichi decks appropriate for archiving*. DR-1 is the only in the DR
series with manual playback azimuth adjustment.
I've acquired several of these fine machines for the purpose, acquired
through e-Bay, usually $350-425.00 in VG condition or recently serviced.
I note the deck is dual capstan. But I don't know if the transport
mechanism utilizes the felt-pad lift previously mentioned.
Also remarkable is the astounding sound-to-noise ratio. My metering
consistently shows a noise floor greater than -90 db, the lowest noise
output I've seen from an analog device.
I wonder if other Nakamichi owners have noticed the quietude of the
circuitry/power supplies.
And I appreciate that this Nak comes imprinted with my initials.
