Hi Eli,
ALL digital files have metadata embedded in them. Some of it can be
accessed and manipulated. Other types of metadata, embedded in digital
files, is used as a checksum by the software (or operating system) that
is handling it. Often, digital files are handled in "Chunks" when being
manipulated. (File transfers are a good example)
Tagging was developed and is used for metadata that is specific to MP3
audio files, some other audio and many photo related files. Tagging will
work with Broadcast Wav but it won't be able to access all of the
metadata available. Hence, the software designed for that specific task
with that particular file format. I don't believe (could be wrong) that
tagging software allows for an MD5 checksum to be embedded. Standard Wav
(.wav) files do indeed have metadata embedded into them but, as a rule,
not all the metadata can be edited and there is no provision for MD5.
Hopefully, I haven't muddied the water,
Corey

The most versatile yet straightforward free tagging tool I've come across is mp3tag (https://www.mp3tag.de/en/). Despite the name, it handles proper tagging of all sorts of container formats - MP3, RIFF WAV, FLAC, APE, OGG, etc - and is continually developed and maintained in IMHO a pretty impressive way (by a sole developer - it is not open source). BWF Metaedit appears to have a bunch of other fields (under the 'Core' area) whose meaning is opaque to me (as a layperson) but it may be what you're looking for. It also only appears to work with RIFF WAVs, from what I can tell, so it won't help you with mp3 files.
