I don't know where you got that bit of disinformation, but saying you
need a steel needle to play a shellac record is like saying you need
a Model T Ford to drive on Route 66.
Back in the day when gramophone soundboxes were heavy and
the groove supplied all of the motive power to produce the sound,
sacrificial steel needles were necessary to reduce wear to the record.
The cheap steel needle wore down rather than the expensive record.
Nowadays (ie, Post-WWII) lightweight pickups and modern
turntables provide much better reproduction than any antique
technology.
