My advice is that he will be seriously disappointed by the quality of
the recorded sound unless the machine has been properly calibrated by a
good technician. Even after that, he may be disappointed, as 1/4"
4-track has poor signal/noise ratio, and the hiss may drive him nuts.
If you can find an old Ampex AG440 4-track (they go for pretty cheap)
and get it tuned up properly, I think he'd be happier, at least until he
had to lift it. Of course, he'll need a 2-track recorder to mix to, and
a mixer, and...
