As the <did> wraps "core information" about the described materials, I would say the decision hinges on whether you see a digital object as part of the "good basic description" of an archival unit, or more derivative and therefore deserving of being cast out of the <did>. We've been placing our <dao>s within the <did>.

Subject: placement of dao ?
Apparently dao can go either inside or outside the <did>. I'm looking for reasons/rationale for placing it in one place over the other. Thoughts?
<c02>
<did>
<unittitle>Smith, John</unittitle>
photos of Smith and family
<container type="Box">2</container>
</did>
<dao title="John Smith, profile" href="smith_prof.jpg" show="new" actuate="onrequest"/>
<dao title="Mrs. Smith" href="jane_smith.jpg" show="new" actuate="onrequest"/>
</c02>
-- OR --
<c02>
<did>
<unittitle>Newspaper Clippings</unittitle>
<unitdate normal="##" type="inclusive">2007-2008, undated</unitdate>
<container type="Box">1 [V34416]</container>
<dao title="John Smith, profile" href="smith_prof.jpg" show="new" actuate="onrequest"/>
<dao title="Mrs. Smith" href="jane_smith.jpg" show="new" actuate="onrequest"/>
