The 2008 EAD Roundtable meeting will be on Wednesday, August 27, from
3:15-5:15 in Plaza A at the Hilton San Francisco ("B" Ballroom Level,
near the gift shop). The agenda includes reports, the election of a new
Vice Chair / Chair Elect, and two presentations. The full agenda can be
seen here:

I am happy to announce that this year we have two candidates for Vice
Chair / Chair Elect of the EAD Roundtable. They are Sonia Yaco and
Jacquelyn Ferry. Brief candidate bios are at the bottom of this email.
In addition, we would like to have a discussion re: the name of the EAD
Roundtable "Discussion: Is "Encoded Archival Description" an adequate
name for our roundtable?" I will bring printouts to the meeting, but
for those who want to do some background reading, I have attached a
brief summary document of the reasoning behind this discussion.
As SAA 2008 approaches, it's not too soon to think about program
proposals for the 2009 meeting. If you have any ideas for sessions,
please consider submitting a proposal. More information is available at
http://www.archivists.org/conference/austin2009/AM09-call.asp . Feel
free to discuss your ideas with Jill or me at the Roundtable meeting.
I hope to see you in San Francisco,
Jennie Levine

Vice Chair / Chair Elect Candidates
Sonia Yaco
Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist, Old Dominion
University
My background makes me well suited for being the Vice Chair of the EAD
Roundtable. For the last twenty years I have been the president of Anlex
Computer Consulting LLC which specializes in databases, data structures
and search engines for digital and textual information management. I hold a
Masters of Arts degree from the School of Library and Information
Studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a specialization
in archives and records administration. This included Michael Fox’s
three day EAD training course.
I have applied knowledge of EAD, working with staff at three different
repositories to improve their EAD workflow: the Wisconsin Historical
Society, College of William and Mary, and Old Dominion University. My
interest in EAD implementation issues led to a survey of 16 institutions
and the paper, “It's Complicated: Barriers to EAD Implementation”
(Fall/Winter 2008 American Archivist). I have an overall interest in
archivists’ use of technology and spoke on this topic at the Archives,
Records and the User: The Changing Nature of University and Scientific
Archives in the 21st Century conference of the
International Council on Archives, Section on University and Research
Institution Archives, in Dundee, Scotland in August, 2008.
Jacquelyn Ferry
Cataloging Archivist & EAD Coordinator, Wisconsin Historical Society
Jacquelyn Ferry is the Cataloging Archivist and EAD Coordinator for the
Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS), where she is responsible for
cataloging manuscript collections and public records, encoding
collection finding aids, and the maintenance of the archives' online
catalog. While at the WHS, she has led a variety of EAD projects,
including two grant-funded conversion projects, the transition from
version 1.0 to 2002, and a user study of the historical society's shared
finding aid site. In addition to her work at the WHS, Ms. Ferry recently
taught an EAD course in the archives program at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, where she has also guest lectured on topics related
to archival description. Ms. Ferry has worked at the WHS since 2006,
prior to which she worked at the University of Maryland and NARA. She
holds a B.A. in History from Boston University and a M.L.S. from the
University of Maryland. She is interested in the usability of archival
finding aids, the creation of tools to facilitate EAD implementation,
and new methods for describing archival collections online. As
vice-chair/chair-elect of the EAD Roundtable, she would like to expand
the EAD help pages to provide more implementation tools and encourage
more programming and discussion pertaining to the usability and
accessibility of online finding aids. Jacquelyn has been a member of SAA
since 2004, and is a member of the 2009 SAA Program Committee.
