The Archives of American Art has is seeking a graduate intern for 2014 to
assist with a multi–year project funded by the Council of Library and
Information Resources’ Hidden Special Collections and Archives grant
program. Applicants must be students or recent graduates (12 months) of
graduate-level archival programs who have some experience with audiovisual
media, or of specialized graduate programs in audiovisual preservation with
an interest in gaining skills for working in a manuscript repository
setting. Due to the subject matter of the project collections, the
internship will be of particular interest and value to students interested
in contemporary art history.
The intern will work with mixed-media collections and assist with the
development of approaches to processing archival manuscript collections that
contain large amounts of audiovisual media. The internship is designed to
provide hands-on experience with both traditional archival processing and
handling of archival recordings. Interns will be expected to process a small
project collection and to write a finding aid to the collection in EAD using
Archivist’s Toolkit. Interns may also be assigned additional collection
management tasks related to film, video, and/or sound recordings in the
project’s collections.
The intern will be supervised by the Audiovisual Archivist, and will be
expected to commit to a full-time schedule for ten weeks in the summer of
2014. Intern will receive a stipend of $4000.
Required Skills and Abilities:
• Coursework in archival descriptive practices and standards.
• Familiarity with obsolete audiovisual media formats.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
• Experience with archival collections processing
• Experience using EAD and DACS
• Experience identifying and handling archival motion picture film,
video, and sound recordings
