I think you must include the namespace in the XSLT

I would suggest you include the leading '/' in the path to make it root-relative. Otherwise, it's sensitive to the current XSL context.

Like this:

<xsl:value-of select="/ead/eadheader/filedesc/titlestmt/titleproper" />

                     ^^^
