Salvage of Library Collections
In an effort to help victims of past and future natural disasters, such as the recent series of hurricanes, as well as to train custodial divisions staff at the Library of Congress to deal with the not-infrequent water emergencies we have in our Capitol Hill facilities, the Preservation Directorate of the Library of Congress is offering workshops on salvage of library collections.
Description:
Although the workshop is geared toward Library of Congress collections, staff at Federal libraries in the area are invited to attend. The syllabus changes slightly depending on the participants, but each workshop is expected to include the following topics:
Library of Congress Policies and Procedures for water emergencies
Site safety
ReactPaks - essential materials to have on hand during a water event
The varied stages of wetness encountered in a water event
Mitigating damage during a water event
Safe handling of wet materials
Assessment of damage to collections
Drying wet library materials: books, paper, parchment, moderna vs. "old" materials, magnetic media, oversize materials
