The Cataloging Section provides authoritative cataloging for
the bibliographic control of the biomedical publications procured for
the NLM; announces these publications to the worldwide biomedical
community through its bibliographic data distribution service and
through online access via INTERNET and NLM's online public access
catalog (OPAC); develops,
maintains and publishes the NLM Classification; cooperates with the
Library of Congress and with other libraries in a variety of national
shared and cooperative cataloging programs; and assists biomedical
libraries using NLM's cataloging as the source for cataloging copy. The
Head of the Cataloging Section organizes and directs activities, budget
and technology
for a staff of approximately 40 professional librarians, library
technical support personnel and contractors engaged in performing
cataloging and catalog maintenance activities for print, electronic, and
mixed media materials and assumes overall responsibility for the
development and utilization of automation support for the Section and
directs Section
participation in the development or improvement of related NLM systems.
