Science and Engineering Libraries


The University of Virginia Library welcomes applications for the position
of Coordinator, Information and Access Services for the Science and
Engineering Libraries.  The Libraries are seeking a creative and
enthusiastic individual who will shape and direct information services. The
Coordinator will aggressively implement and evaluate electronic services
and will ensure delivery of responsive, quality service in a flexible,
dynamic, team-based environment.

Environment:

The University of Virginia Library is a leader in developing the digital
library, with electronic centers focused on e-texts, digital images, social
sciences data, geographical information, music and media, and rare books
and manuscripts.  The centers are featured on the Library's homepage
(http://www.lib.virginia.edu).  The University Library system consists of
ten libraries, with independent libraries for health sciences, law, and
business.  The libraries serve 11,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate
students and 1,600 teaching faculty. The Science and Engineering Libraries
(SEL) consist of a general science and engineering library and four smaller
collections in Biology/Psychology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Astronomy, and
Physics. The science and engineering population represents 39% of the
faculty and 42% of undergraduates.  The historic grounds and Thomas
Jefferson's Academical Village evoke an image of poise and permanence and
provide a gracious backdrop for teaching, learning, and research.

Job Description:

The Coordinator, who reports to the Director of the Science and
Engineering Libraries (SEL), plans, builds, and evaluates access and
information services which includes circulation, electronic and print
reserves, reference, and databases.  Administers staff and resources of the
access and information units (5 FTE) and coordinates staffing of the
Information Desk.  Guides growth and development of networked information
and integrates electronic information into library services.  Collaborates
in assessing user needs, and developing and promoting standards of
excellence in service delivery. Actively participates in user education and
develops supporting materials. Develops and implements a program of
training on information resources and skills for the staff of the Science
and Engineering Libraries.  Participates in liaison and collection
development activities.  Participates in planning and evaluation of
services and policies by serving as a member of SEL's management team.
Works with colleagues to develop a vision of services as the Library plans
for a major renovation and expansion.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Master's degree in library science preferred or master's degree in related
field. Public service experience and an excellent understanding of the
needs of an engineering or science community.  Strong service orientation.
Demonstrated organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Experience with electronic information resources.  Excellent oral and
written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to professional
growth and development.  Preferred: Supervisory or administrative
experience.  Interest in planning services for a new  library for  the 21st
century. Instruction experience. Commitment to a team-based environment.

Salary and Benefits: $30.000 or higher, depending on qualifications.
General faculty status, 22 days vacation, generous vacation and sick leave,
group health insurance, state, TIAA/CREF and other retirement plans,
research leave.
