ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
Position: Head, Special Collections Department, Strozier Library, Florida
State University. (Search reopened.)
Rank: Librarian and Department Head or Associate Librarian and Department
Head depending upon qualifications.
Description: Manages the Special Collections Department. Organizes,
develops, and promotes rare books, archival and special collections.
Participates in reference service, collection development, and library
instruction related to rare books, archives, and manuscripts. Promotes the
department's holdings to campus and non-campus constituencies. Coordinates
the provision of services by supervising a departmental staff of two FTE
librarians and two support staff as well as a number of student employees.
Reports to the Assistant Director for Public Services. Hours are 9 to 6
weekdays.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will bring to this position broad
knowledge of the relevance of rare and special collections to the academic
mission of the institution as well as an understanding of their value to
scholarship beyond the University. Required: M.L.S. degree from an ALA
accredited library school and five years of professional experience after
receipt of the M.L.S. degree; nine years of professional experience after
receipt of the M.L.S. degree required for Librarian. Supervisory, academic
/ research library and special collections (i.e. archives, manuscripts,
and / or rare books) experience. Preferred: Effective computer, reference,
instructional and bibliographic skills. Demonstrated excellent oral and
written communication and interpersonal skills; evidence of success in
interaction with colleagues, administrators, staff, patrons, and donors;
and demonstrated flexibility and initiative in changing environment.
Salary: Salary range is $30,000 to $38,000 for Associate Librarian;
$35,000 to $47,500 for Librarian.
Benefits: This is a full-time, twelve month non-tenured appointment.
Benefits include 22 days vacation, 13 days sick leave, group medical,
dental and life insurance, TIAA/CREF or state retirement, and no state or
local income tax.
The Library: Located in Tallahassee, Florida's capital city, a growing
community, with a population of more than 213,000, the Florida State
University, a public, coeducational institution of the nine-member State
University System of Florida, has an enrollment of over 29,000 students.
The Library system includes the Robert Manning Strozier Library (the main
library), and four branch libraries (the Harold Goldstein Library Science
Library, the Claude Pepper Library, the Paul A. M. Dirac Science Library,
and the Warren D. Allen Music Library). The Libraries, including the Law
Library, have volume holdings totaling over 2,176,000 books and
periodicals, over 490,000 government documents, and over 4,500,000
microforms. The Library is a member of ARL, CRL, RLG and Solinet. For
