OCLC has announced resumption of migration to the New FirstSearch
system, beginning immediately. All migration must occur by August 20,
2000, when OCLC will reroute all logons to the new system. A message
was posted to FIRSTSEARCH-L today, June 28, at noon, with more
detailed information about migration, and will cross-posted to FEDLINK
lists soon.
FEDLINK has scheduled training opportunities in the DC area, listed
below. Federal libraries outside the DC area should check with
regional networks, whose calendars are linked to OCLC's home page at
http://www.oclc.org/oclc/address/netdiv.htm . (Note: as of noon,
6/28/00, this link was not working. It has been reported, so please
check the link again if it does not work for you today.)
A free briefing on OCLC's New FirstSearch system will be held on
September 25, at the next FEDLINK OCLC Users meeting. The formal
meeting announcement for this event will be issued via listservs, the
FLICC home page, mailings and newsletters later this summer. This
overview should be sufficient for those who have had training before,
when New FirstSearch implementation first began, and those who need a
general understanding of the system. Those who only search FS also
should not need formal training, since the web interface is
self-explanatory. Furthermore, extensive documentation is available
on the web at http://www.oclc.org/oclc/fs_new/doc.htm .
One-day workshops for FirstSearch system administrators will be held
at the FEDLINK training room. Registration for these workshops will
begin July 5. Register online at
http://lcweb.loc.gov/flicc/oclcform.html . Projected dates and times
are Tuesday July 25 and Thursday July 27; Friday August 4 and Thursday
August 17. Training also will continue after the August 20 cutover.
All classes are 9:00-4:00 and cost $100 per person.
