Background and additional information:

The item has actually been on the table of the JAC since before the February
2000 meeting (with a proposal to include in both tables). It was deferred at
that meeting. New proposals have been received from two different proposers:

lang_in_eng_change = ARAGONESE
lang_in_fre_change = ARAGONESE
iso_639_2_b = roa
iso_639_2_t = roa
change_requested = The code roa is classified in ISO 639 as a collective
language code. It encompasses all the related languages that comprise the
members of a single genetic subgroup (excluding those that have a more
specific code).

The Aragonese is a language, spoken for very people in Aragon, and have very
web in Internet.We need a more specific code.

We'd Like The Code for aragonese language - ARG -

Thanks.

addinfo = About 12,000 active speakers, and about 40,000 passive speakers.
Protected language in Aragon, officially teached in some areas. It's spoken
on the northern areas of Aragon (Spain).

There is an introduction to the history of the language in Wikipedia:
http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aragonese_language

SIL code is AXX (http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=AXX)

Additional information was requested and received. This information has been
circulated to the JAC on 2002-10-22.

There has been some discussion as to the inclusion in the alpha-2 code
table. Information received indicates that the degree of "official status"
and ongoing lexicography and terminology work supports the inclusion in the
alpha-2 code table.

Identifiers:

The original alpha-2 proposal is "an". That is available.

The Ethnologue identifier is "AXX", which is also indicated by one of the
proposers; another proposed identifier (in the other submitted proposal) is
"arg". Both these are available in ISO 639-2. However, "ARG" is used for a
different language in Ethnologue, and we may wish to avoid new conflicts
with Ethnologue. All "sensible" alpha-3 combinations starting with AR, AA,
AG, AO, AN, AE, AS are taken in Ethnologue. For that reason I propose "axx".
