Hello Ian,
If the translated title is stored correctly in the 240, with the language of the
translation in subfield "l", there is no reason that a smart ILMS couldn't
generate a 500 note : Translation of : .... as you suggest.
It also is not beyond the resources of even a copy cataloguer to see the 240
with subfields "a" and "l" and be instructed to copy and paste the title into a
500 note beginning with the words "Translation of" as a prefix.
However if the translated title is buried in a generic note, then it will be
much harder for an ILMS to recognize the information.
As I mentioned in an earlier response on this topic, if we are looking to the
future for features that most of our ILMS' cannot currently achieve, such as
FRBR style links between editions and works, then we really do need to lift our
game and try to ensure that collocating information is properly stored in
appropriate tags.
I was originally taught to "catalogue for a hundred years". On the surface an
astonishing statement in today's world of change. However I believe that good,
clear analysis of data and appropriate storage will stand us in better stead for
the future than limiting our horizons by what our systems currently do.

p.s. Would that I could fly business class to conferences, especially when
travelling to the US from Australia! I am grateful just to be going.
