A parallel title is a title in another language that is essentially
equivalent to the "main" title. We are defining "translated" loosely to
mean the title in another language (however it got that way). Thus,
indicator 2 value 1 is mapped to MODS type="translated".
As for use of subfields $a$f, what we have done in the mappings is mapped
whatever MARC subfields have specific elements in MODS and mapped
everything else (as a string) into the main element. Thus, in <title>
there is <subtitle> ($b), <partNumber> ($n), <partName> ($p). Anything
else that doesn't have its own subelement is mapped to <title> and dumped
in as a string. We don't have a special element in title for $f (although
maybe someone would argue that we should-- this came up recently in the
context of conferences). We have left out a few subfields that don't map
properly here: $h (medium) goes in <physicalDescription><form> with
authority="gmd"; $g (Miscellaneous information) is dropped (rarely used).
I realize that we really should go back and map $i to the displayLabel
attribute, so we'll do that.
I hope that explains it. I'm copying this to the MODS list.
