The University of Chicago Library is crosswalking MARC to MODS for use
as descriptive metadata embedded in METS objects for one of our
digital library collections.  This is in preference to crosswalking to
Dublin Core.  In this case, all of the electronic objects were created
from physical objects in our collection which already had detailed
cataloging records.

The future is, of course, somewhat unclear.  We expect to use MODS
similarly in future digitization projects, and would consider making
MODS data optionally available, by an implementor's agreement, for OAI
harvesting.

I don't expect that we will be producing metadata directly in MODS,
rather than crosswalking, anytime soon.  But I'd love to be wrong
about that.
