Matthew,
In the model of things I have in my mind, the relationships are thus
the record - work/expression
the performer - person
relationship between performer and record - performer plays an instrument (instrumentalist)
violin - instrument used by the performer in his/her relationship to the record
"perfomer of the violin solo in such and such recording" - a description of the performer, useful to distinguish him/her from other people.
We don't have a field for objects such as instruments that are part of a role...
If you can create your own role vocabulary, you could make it more specific
instrumentalist (violin)
or
violinist
but that might not be atomistic enough for some application you want to have where the instruments are the thing...
However, applying the "whatever works" rule and using description for violin may satisfy what you need for now. It just may look odd in some other context.
About Itzhak Perlman: violin
Thinking about structured descriptive metadata as an alterntive language, understandable by computers, that gets translated into language understandable by humans. Thinking about translating our field structures into sentences that make the meaning plain - and vice versa. Right now, pretty tough to make sense that way, but isn't that where we'd like to go?
Maybe that <role><roleTerm> needs a little expansion... ? Could we have more than one type of <roleTerm> in the wrapper?
Just thoughts,
Laura

Subject: [MODS] Musical performers in mods:name
I'd be grateful to have any community comment on the following example of
the use of the <description> element in mods:name. This is one option we are
considering for capturing details of the performers of digitised music
recordings in our collection, and specifically of the instruments they play
(or voice types).
<name type="personal">
<namePart>Bloggs, Joe</namePart>
<role>
<roleTerm>instrumentalist</roleTerm>
</role>
<description>violin</description>
</name>
Is this an appropriate use of the element, even though it's being used to
provide additional information, rather than for disambiguation (we'd use
LCNAF forms for names in practice).
I'm aware that the other way of capturing information about performers is to
use mods:note type="performers", in the tradition of MARC 511, but, for our
purposes, performers are of as much interest as composers etc and we'd like
them to be searchable via name searches and subject to authority control.
It's a bit of a philosophical thing with MARC that it makes performers into
lesser beings than composers and writers.
Many thanks,
Matthew
