Network Bulletin No.: 98-24
Date: April 10, 1998
Subject: Magazines
Index term: Distribution delays
The introduction in 1998 of new magazines in braille (BR)
and flexible disc (FD) formats, as well as the first NLS
magazines on recorded cassette (RC), has created
situations that may confuse patrons. These include the
following:
_Health Newsletters_
Subscribers to the _Health Newsletters_ in either BR or FD
formats will actually receive more than one newsletter. BR
subscribers will receive _Berkeley Wellness Letter_, _Mayo
Clinic Health Letter_, and _Harvard Health Letter_. FD
subscribers will get the _Johns Hopkins Medical Letter
Health after Fifty_, _Nutrition Action Healthletter_, _Dr.
Andrew Weil's Self Healing_, and _Healthline_.
These newsletters are not published at the same time. The
braille newsletters are mailed separately. In the case of
FD _Health and Nutrition_, whichever publications are
available in time for disc duplication are included in that
month's issue. If one of the newsletters misses a month, it
will be included on the following month's discs. The titles
included will be listed in the opening remarks of the first
disc. Each title is recorded on a separate side.
_Magazines from England (RNIB)_
As of late March we still have not received copies of the
new publications ordered from RNIB in England: _Conundrum_
and _Short Stories_. We have been notified that future
issues are en route; we will not have more specific
information about their availability until they arrive.
Unfortunately, we are not certain at present whether we
will be able to fill back orders.
_Late or Missing Issues_
The first issue of a number of the new magazines for 1998
was not shipped until late January or February due to the
time required to produce or, in some cases, difficulty in
obtaining print versions. As a result, some subscribers
believed they had missed their initial issues. As the year
progresses, the magazines should begin to arrive on a
regular basis.
If any subscriber asks for back issues, ask the Multistate
Center West about availability. Some early issues, however,
may not be available.
We recommend that the library itself subscribe to new
magazines, especially those with no "rollover" subscription
from another magazine, to provide back copies for patrons.
