NLS OPERATIONS ALERT
no. 10-08
DATE : January 27, 2010
TO : Network Libraries
FROM : Carolyn H. Sung, Chief, Network Division
Subject : Digital equipment status in CMLS
Libraries must indicate the type of equipment assigned to a reader in their
automated circulation system so that the information is picked up in the
weekly export of CMLS transactions, ensuring that CMLS information is
current and accurate. Data Management runs the CMLS update on Thursday of
each week, so all network libraries are encouraged to submit their CMLS
transactions by close of business each Wednesday.
NLS uses CMLS weekly statistical updates—specifically, those relating to
the type of digital equipment assigned to a reader (i.e., standard or
advanced)—as an indication of the quantity of digital equipment assigned to
readers for each library.
Libraries with manual circulation systems may access NLS Webnet and update
equipment codes online.
Libraries should be aware that NLS is tracking this CMLS data and comparing
it to the quantity of digital equipment sent to each machine-lending agency
(MLA). Significant discrepancies between equipment sent and assigned may
lead to discussions with regional libraries and administering agencies on
possibly modifying the size of future equipment shipments until the MLA and
its sublending agency (if any) catch up with the backlog of equipment to be
assigned.
