POSITION TITLE: Deputy Director/Outreach Librarian
SALARY: $45,400.00 - $55,500.00 per annum
LOCATION: Braille & Talking Book Library
Perkins School for the Blind

HOURS: Monday through Friday, 8:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.
FUNCTIONS: The Deputy Director/Outreach Librarian, under the
supervision of the Library Director, __is responsible for__: Direct
supervision of the Registration Services Manager and the Equipment
Specialist; general supervision of all other Registration Services staff;
responsible for overall library operations in the absence of the Regional
Librarian.
Also responsible for:
-- Promotion of services; production of informational materials for
patrons and potential patrons of the Library; represents the Library at
in-service trainings, consumer meetings, exhibits; develops and
implements evaluation and outreach strategies; compiles findings;
recommends service improvements.
-- Assists the library director with interagency communications and
public relations activities.
-- Assists in the management, monitoring, reporting, troubleshooting
and evaluation of the Library's automation and inventory management
system.
-- Conducts recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training of new staff
for the Registration Unit; provides backup support for the Circulation
Unit; generates and reviews readership and circulation statistical
reports, reviews service frequency and status issues. Assists the library
director with the preparation and follow-up for BTBL Advisory Board
meetings.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have a Masters Degree
in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program, three (3) years
Library of Congress program experience, public library or reference
experience, two (2) years supervisory experience required. General
keyboarding and statistical experience required. Previous experience
in managing and troubleshooting library automation systems, with
particular experience with the Keystone Library Automation System
preferred.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate the particular knowledge,
skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the
position:
Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication; skills
in self-management; an ability to work well with others; demonstrated
proficiency in use of computerized library automation systems; ability to
learn the operation of the Library's computerized circulation system;
ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and activities; ability to
learn the operation of Library audio playback equipment; ability to write
clearly and communicate verbally with patrons and staff; ability to listen
to phone calls and clearly speak to Library borrowers; ability to move
materials and carry items for short distances without assistance; ability
to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance.
Preference may be given to candidates with the following additional
training or experience: Knowledge of the NLS Braille and Talking Book
Library network, volunteer services to people with print disabilities,
local or regional agencies serving blind and disabled individuals; broad
literary background; knowledge of braille literary code; previous
experience working with blind, visually impaired, physically disabled
and/or multi-impaired individuals.
