After what, almost half a century?, it becomes apparent that the problem
is semantics: multiple meanings applied to the word "name." "Robert Lewis"
is only part of the whole *name*, not a *name" in and of itself.
If AACR2 had used "fuller form of name" for the entire name and "fuller
form of surname or other part of name" for parts, we wouldn't have a
problem. Example:
"Robert Lewis Smith" and "R.L. Smith" are fuller forms of the [whole]
*name* than "Robert Smith", "R. Smith", "Lewis Smith", or "L. Smith", but
"Robert Lewis" provides fuller forms of the *surnames* than "R. L.",
"Robert L.", or "R. Lewis."
It's just common sense (not just semantics).
Cheers!
