Most of you know this already, but some of you who were not
at ALA Midwinter may not yet have heard that I am leaving Indiana
University. On Monday, January 10, I presented Dean Suzanne
Thorin with my letter of resignation from Indiana University
Libraries. My last official day will be February 16, but my last
day on campus will be February 4. I will of course resign from
official duties with the PCC since I will no longer be affiliated
with a PCC institution. Marjorie Bloss will step immediately into
the role of Chair.
On Monday, February 7, 2000, I will finish my 2 years at IU
with a discussion of our beloved PCC at the OCLC Users' Council,
and then I will fly to Chicago to accept a new position as
Director of Product Management for Ex Libris (USA), Inc.
I expect to spend the first 2-3 months in the near northside
of Chicago before returning to Boston to open their new East Coast
office.
Pressing personal reasons lie behind this move to reunite with my
family. I have been professionally challenged and satisfied at IU,
but it has become apparent that I need to look for future
professional challenges closer to home. I believe that this
position will provide me that challenge.
The opportunities that I have had during the last 6 or so years
to work with all of you as we conceived and birthed and grew the
CCC and the PCC have been among the highlights and most enjoyable
accomplishments of my professional career. I say so sincerely and
without reservation. I hope that we will have continued opportunities
to work together. Indeed, I hope that this will spark, at least
in some quarters, a new era of PCC-vendor relations; you can count
on my keeping the PCC's interests on the front burner of development
at Ex Libris. In a moment of (madness? inspiration?) at the PCC
Participants' meeting I suggested that we define and trademark a
logo based on the one seen on the front of most PC system boxes:
PCC Compliant System Inside. I am being only semi-facetious when
I say that.
For future reference, my email account at Ex Libris will be:
[log in to unmask] The phone number at the Chicago office is
(773)404-5527 or (877) 527-1689 (toll free). I will send you the
Boston-area phone number when it is available in the spring.
I hope to be able to keep in touch with all of you on a regular basis.
Sincerely,
Michael
