     The Program for Cooperative Cataloging will  present  the Twelfth
Series Institute for NACO libraries May 17-19, 2000 at the Library of
Congress in Washington, DC. Judy Kuhagen, Senior  Policy Specialist in
the
Cataloging Policy and Support Office, will be the instructor for the
course,
which has received excellent reviews.  The Institute is open to
experienced NACO
catalogers at independent NACO libraries.  Solid NACO skills are a
prerequisite for series training.

Course summary and outcome

     This course will focus  on  the relevant chapters of AACR2R,
the LCRIs, the MARC21 Authority Format, and searching techniques
for series.  At the end of  the course, participants will undergo review
until
they reach independence for contributing series authority records to the

National Authority File.  Institutions with previous graduates of the
series
institute are expected to perform review for the new series trainees
they send
in May.  In addition, Series Institute participants are  encouraged to
train
colleagues in their home institutions to contribute SARs.

Schedule

     Sessions run all day Wednesday-Friday.  Participants coming from a
distance will need to arrive Tuesday to take full advantage of this
class.
Depending on connections, it may be possible to leave mid or late Friday

afternoon.  A Saturday-night stayover often lowers airfare, and
Washington
is lovely in the spring!

 Costs and housing

     There  is  no charge for the course itself, but participants will
be
responsible for their own transportation, housing, and meals. In an
attempt
to save some of your money and research time, we  have reserved a  group

of 10 rooms at the government rate of $118 plus tax at  the Holiday Inn
Downtown at 1155 14th Street, NW 20005, near the McPherson Square
Metro station on the Orange and Blue lines, the same lines which serve
the
Capitol  Hill Metro station across from the Library of Congress.  You
should
call  the hotel (202-737-1200) to reserve your room with a credit card,
BUT
ONLY AFTER your place in the class is confirmed and you receive the
group name
under which you must register for the government rate.  Participants are
free to
research and reserve housing at other hotels, inns, or B&Bs if they
wish.
