As an employee of the Donohue Group, a library contractor doing cataloging
for an assortment of different libraries, I have a little different view of
this question. While some of our clients are not in the least interested in
authority work on their records, others consider authorized headings to be
a critical part of the product we supply to them. The Donohue Group has as
its clients several historical societies and archival institutions of which
the collections generate numerous new headings. In order to provide good
service to our clients and to the library community as a whole, we need to
be able to participate in the PCC program. We would like to see the concept
of independent participant become more mainstream.
The nature of our service as contractors allows us access to collections in
institutions that do not have the resources to contribute either cataloging
or headings to the Library of Congress. Our expertise allows us to do both.
The library community can only benefit by spreading a wider net for
contributors to PCC.
