Im so sorry--would love to be able to do this, but I have to fly to
LA Wed evening in order to be ready for our 8:30 am meeting on
Thursday. If a quick conference call early next week would help, I d
be glad to try to work that in.
I assume Diane may have reported to you that we are including a
folklife specialist position in our FY00 succession plan job list.
This would free you to go ahead and post one of these professional
positions--and if the LaPorte thing can be brought to closure, you
could fill two positions off the one posting. These two new hires, in
addition, to the Cataloging detailee and junior fellow should offer
some much -needed help for this year, while we look toward something
more in FY01 and then the big-bang for 02. Have you had any
discussion with Peter as to when he assumes he would return full-time
to AFC? My working assumption is that that would occur in early
summer, but we have never formally discussed this. Once the big
ingathering of local legacies occurs, and we get past the May 23
celebration, the collections become AFC's--along with "ownership" of
whatever on-going similar program may emerge from the strategic
planning

Winston, I really am learning something new everyday (usually by
making the mistake and then having to correct it)!!
I am so sorry that you won't be here for the Board meeting - your
voice is a critical one, and we will count on Diane to represent
you.
Do you think you might be here to meet with Mal O'Connor, Bill
Kinney
and me over dinner on Wednesday the 16th? We were planning to go
over
strategy for the meeting, and since you won't be there, dinner would
be a good time to get your input on things. I think that we were
just
going to go to a restaurant within walking distance of the LC, and
we
were going to meet about 6:00 pm.
Let me know.
peggy

You're a quick learner--there are alwasy ways to get things done,
but
learning how to be effective in a circuitous manner is part of our
challenge

Dear Board Members:
It was brought to my attention that my previous message concerning
the reappointment of Bill Kinney to the Board could be construed as
lobbying. Being new to the federal government, I was unaware that
this message might violate rules set for federal employees. Please
accept my apologies and I hereby retract that message.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting next week.
Best always,
Peggy
