I recently saw Mike Leigh's film about the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership, TOPSY TURVY (twice, actually, which I seldom do -- I recommend it highly -- it's nothing to do with sf but, in a way, very much to do with fantasy), and having once again heard the Mikado's solo number, I was stirred by the memory of a short story I'd read as a teenager, in one of Judith Merril's YEAR'S BEST anthologies, called (you guessed it) "My Object All Sublime". As with so many such memories nowadays, it came without the author (or much else) attached. Does anyone recognise it? I do remember thinking it was a nifty title, never having heard THE MIKADO at that point. I still think so, even if it was, well, "borrowed".
