I'd say science fiction isn't losing ground, but science fiction not based on
a movie or television show is. Many new fans are discovering SF through
television and movies, and books based on those television shows and movies,
instead of non media tie-in works. SF is popular at the movies, but they are
merely action movies with a slight SF premise.
