MARC 21 Format for Classification Data
2000 Edition
Network Development and MARC Standards Office
Library of Congress
The 2000 edition of the MARC 21 Format for Classification Data is now
available from the Library of Congress. As the comprehensive
documentation on the MARC 21 classification format, this publication
defines the content designators and codes (tags, indicators, subfield
codes, and coded values) that identify the data elements in MARC 21
classification records. This new publication supersedes the 1990 edition
and Update No. 1 (July 1995) of the USMARC Format for Classification Data
as well as the base text of the Canadian MARC Communication Format:
Classification Data. In addition, it includes changes to the
classification format resulting from proposals which were considered by
the ALA ALCTS/LITA/RUSA Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information
Committee (MARBI) at its meetings from 1998 through January 2000 and by
the Canadian Committee on MARC (CCM) at its meetings from 1998 through
January 2000.
Major changes in this edition include changes to accommodate multilingual
editions of a classification scheme and the addition of a field to
identify a rule for building a classification number. There are also
numerous editorial changes.
From 1994-1997, the USMARC and CAN/MARC user communities worked to
eliminate all remaining differences in their two formats. In 1997 and
early 1998, updates to the formats were issued that made the format
specifications identical. MARC 21 is the new name of the harmonized
CAN/MARC and USMARC Formats.
MARC 21 Format for Classification Data (ISBN 0-8444-1000-4) is available
