Herewith I formally withdraw my request to make changes in the glosses for
the Gaelic languages in ISO 639-2 and ISO 639-1. The RA/JAC should make no
changes whatsoever to the text as it presently stands in the published
versions of the two standards.
I do not withdraw the request because I believe it to lack technical
accuracy or merit. Indeed I believe the request to have been a solution to
a long-standing problem of language identification with regard to
widely-used synonyms.
I withdraw the request because other experts here in Ireland have not been
able to make up their minds about what they want, and I believe that it is
inappropriate to waste further committee time discussing the request or its
merits or the politics, personal or otherwise, involved.
I regret any inconvenience caused to members of the RA/JAC.
My resignation as a TC37/SC2 officially-appointed observer member of the
RA/JAC remains in effect.
