We experienced a different error with the XMetaL 1.2 page preview feature, but after much trial and error we simply reinstalled the program last Friday and now it works. The weird part was that we first moved the software to a different computer to test the theory that something was wrong with the configuration of the first computer. When doing that, we came across a different error, but resolved it (it wanted a certain XSL document which didn't seem to exist, so we renamed ours to the name it was looking for, which worked). Then we moved XMetaL back to the machine it was first on and didn't come across either the original error or the one we encountered on the second machine. I don't understand why, but that's what happened.

We are experiencing Page Preview problems, too. We just installed XMetaL
2.0. When I try to preview tagged documents (even the sample documents
provided with XMetaL), I get the following error message:
Page Preview Error: Automation server can't create object. You need to get
the latest version of MSXML from the Microsoft site.
I emailed SoftQuad about the problem (a few days ago) but have not yet
received a reply.
