Are you referring to the recent THE 13TH WARRIOR,
which came and went pretty quickly and is available on
video, or is this more a straight forward Beowulf adaptation?
Sorry if you're having trouble reading or receiving this. It's just that
I'm using b*****dy Lotus Notes 5 or higher and this is a really weird
programme.
I know quite a lot of people have been writing about Beowulf and the 13th
Warrior and I want to add my own 5 cents to the discussion.
There is the 13th Warrior, based on Michael Crichton's not very good novel
and starring Antonio Banderas. It made it to the Polish cinemas and out
very quickly, had bad critiques. And it has nothing to do with the Beowulf
original yarn.
Then there's Beowulf, based on Beowulf, starring Christopher Lambert, which
din't make it into Polish cinemas, though it got very good critiques in the
SF press.
It's difficult to say what makes it to the cinemas; Star Trek won't make
it, but X-men has, Bicentennial Man hasn't but Hollow Man has, Galaxy Quest
probably won't but Princess Mononoke has.
I've been a lurker on this list for quite a long time, but life's so hectic
and I have other fannish obligations; I'm one of the editors of a - Polish
only - internet SF magazine. We're the most visited one on the Polish
internet, over 30.000 viewers each month. And the oldest SF prozine has
only an edition of 50.000 each month, sold copies - 35.000.
So, if you want to talk about SF outside USA, especially in Poland, drop me
a line, it's life, though not as you know it...
