One book that looked at this was Steven C Gould's "Helm". This book is set
on an interstellar colony after a disaster has made Earth uninhabitable.
They are not equipped for survival as they might have wished, and end up
with a curious mixture of technology. They fight with bows and arrows, and
give blood transfusions to their wounded.
