Dear Ana et al. --
On the BIBCO visions wish list, #3 is batch overlay. I'd like to see
it be a smart overlay or a combination of merge and overlay. We have
folks doing copy cataloging in a couple of our special collections.
They sometimes find copy which is a little weak but they add local
notes concerning provenance, inscription(s), condition of copy, etc.
Since the rare book community likes to have this information
available (inter)nationally, we generally put these notes in 500 $5
with RLIN-defined 79X fields for access. If there were an automatic
overlay mechanism, we'd want it to be smart enough to do a merge of
common and copy-specific information.
