Don't know if this is what you are thinking of, but in Jules Verne's _From
the Earth to the Moon_ there is a dog named _Satellite_ that dies early in
the voyage, is jettisoned, and follows along beside the spaceship all the
way to the Moon, as an illustration of the principles of celestial mechanics.
