A subscriber to the list wrote to me wanting to know why he couldn't post
messages to the list. The list subscribers directory had his correct
email address so I came to the conclusion that his posting had made it to
the list, he just didn't see them himself.
This reminded me that the default setting for the EAD list does NOT
automatically send a copy of a new posted message to the address from
which the message was received. This assumes the person who wrote a
message doesn't need to see it since they wrote it.
There is a comfort factor in seeing messages you post actually get to the
list. If you are one of the many people who want/need to see your own
postings, there is an easy way to change the default for your
subscription. Send a one-line message to the EAD list administration
software. The address is: [log in to unmask] The message should read:
SET EAD REPRO
This will change the default setting "NOREPRO" to "REPRO" and you should
start to see copies of your own posting when they go out.
Please DO NOT SEND commands to change your subscription to the list
itself. "[log in to unmask]" should only be used when you want EVERYONE to see a
message. Changes to subscriptions are handled by a piece of software at
the address "[log in to unmask]". This includes subscriptions,
unsubscriptions, and changes to subscriptions. If ever your email address
changes and you are unable to change your subscription (you must use the
SAME email address you did when you subscribed to make any changes to your
subscription), you can write directly to me at the address
below: [log in to unmask] I administer the EAD list--that is, I take care of
maintenance and troubleshooting.
When you subscribed you received a message that explained all the
technical things you need to know to control your own subscription. Many
people delete this message. If you need that information again, it is
available on the Web at the following URL:
http://lcweb.loc.gov/ead/eadlist.html
I just thought this information might be of use to some of you long-time
subscribers who may have forgotten some of these details.
