Julia,
LC's project to create subdivision authority records is not yet
complete; we are about two-thirds of the way through the project. We
expect to focus on creating the remaining subdivision records when the
pinyin conversion project of subjects is completed shortly. When the
subdivision authority record project is complete, there will be
matching form (185) and topical (180) authority records for those
subdivisions that can function as either forms or topics. Not all the
matching sets have been completed yet. In the case of --Art, only
the topical subdivision record (sh 99001934) currently exists. Please
note that its scope note says that as a topical subdivision it is used
for works about art depicting a person (living before 1400), deity, or
figure. Currently, there is a matching set for a comparable
subdivision, --Art and the war, [revolution, etc.]. Its form
subdivision record is sh 99001282 and its topical subdivision record
is sh 99001935.
The subdivision --Art can function as a form subdivision for
works that consist of reproductions of art works or as a topical
subdivision for works about art. In the lists of free-floating
subdivisions in the Subject Cataloging Manual and in Free-Floating
Subdivisions: An Alphabetical Index, subdivisions that can function as
forms are coded $v with the proviso that they may be coded as $x when
assigned to about the forms.

The online record for Art as a topical subdivision (sh 99001934)
gives $x.
Our looseleaf copy of H 1095 (August 1999) gives $v. Which is
correct?
I'm betting on $x, because it's not a form subdivision.
Thanks!
