Kerstin:
Never moved from XML to MARC, but working the other way round we used the
perl module MARC::XML / marc.pm (available from CPAN and sourceforge.net)
to create XML which was then modified using an in-house XSLT stylesheet to
create what we call the overview of the finding aid (admininfo,
archdesc>did etc.); the inventory section was added later by other means.
The same tools, I presume, may be used in the reverse direction, but I
think that you will find the receiving system a little more picky, and your
database administrators a little leery at accepting your input through
these channels.
Also, I seem to remember using a Windows binary from http://www.logos.com/
, again for moving from USMARC to XML. It may or may not still be in
development (or of use to you).
