Hey Folks,
I've just started working in a completely unautomated Universtiy Archives.
Since we are not tied into an existing system, I feel this is a good
opportunity to explore options that will allow us to generate EAD
documents as an output of whatever system we end up using.
I'm currently looking into a variety of off-the-shelf database systems for
our collection but I'd like to choose one that will produce SGML that
won't require too much work to get into EAD format.
I am starting from scratch here. We only have a few collections with
finding aids in word processed documents, the rest are print only (in
binders). Our accessions are all in print form only as well. I want
to migrate all of our files into a relational database and use the
database to spit out print finding aids, MARC files, EAD files etc.
I've noticed that most of what I've read about implementing EAD, concerns
problems people are having generating EAD from the variety of systems that
they've been using over the years.
My question to the list is:
If you had to do it all over again, what database system would people
start with?
