Kerstin,
There is a brief discussion of options in section 4.3.4 of the EAD
Application Guidelines. The Minnesota Historical Society current uses a
combination of Logos Software's Marcxml program and an XSL stylesheet to
convert MARC records to EAD. One could certainly swim in the other
direction, converting a finding aid into MARC. It would require a different
stylesheet.
There will be some limitations, of course, principally in the area of
enhancements that will need to be made to the resulting MARC record. For
example, the MARC fixed fields will have default values supplied during the
conversion process, some of which like the date elements will have to be
manually inserted. Any fields in the 1XX, 6XX and 7XX sequences that have
subfields will require similar editing as EAD obviously does not support the
full granularity of encoding found in MARC for this data. This should be a
relatively straightforward matter. Finally, with this method your ILS must
have the capacity for importing an externally-produced MARC record in the
form of an ASCII text file.

We are in the midst of changing to the Endeavor library catalog.
I am using XMetal 2.0 to produce EAD encoded finding aids.
What do we need to do to pull the Marc 21 records from XMetal 2.0
to the online catalog?
Thanks for your help.
