Subject: Attribute "level"
Hi:
1. Different vocabulary usages in different archival traditions don't help
the desirable international standardization...
DTD EAD presents a semiclosed list of the level attribute. The EAD Tag
Library doesn't present them in hierarchical order. As a consequence, the
conceptual meaning of some of them is not clear, at least for me. Someone
would help me with the definitions and an ordered list of levels?
Ex. "recordgroup", "subgroup": Michael Cook (MAD) states that the american
usage recordgroup stays for "group" or "archive group" (english usage)and
should be preferred to "fonds"...
2. In european archivist tradition, we are much more concerned about the
intermediate levels between fonds and series as it seems to be the case in
the US. Classes (M. Cook), or sections, or subfonds (as someone has pointed
out in EAD revision suggestions) are useful to organize the materials and
reflect the structure of corparations or individuals activities.
I suggest that their importance should be reflected in the DTD, by enlarging
and establishing clear concepts for the set of "levels".
3. Now a simple question: Consider a finding aid with intermediate levels
between fonds <c01>and series <c04> (let call it classes <c02> and sub
classes <c03>, or whatever). If I need to nest a series directly into the
fonds (without any intermediate level) it seems to me that I should maintain
the <c04> tag for it. In this case, I'ld need to create empty <c02> and
<c03> to be allowed to have my series as a <c04>. Am I right? It seems a bit
complicated...
Thank you
