I'm currently working on a grant application that includes the implementation of EAD for our existing finding aids. We plan to encode all of the finding aids completed since 1996. The finding aids were created in Microsoft Word. In addition we will include processing collections and encoding those finding aids. The software program recommended to me has been XMetal. We plan to encode our finding aids in XML and convert them to HTML so we can provide easy access to users. My questions include:
What were the initial costs for implementing the encoding?
Was your existing server able to support the software program and storage of the data?
What were the hourly costs for encoding? Or how much per page?
Did you find it easier to encode in-house or did you contract the work out?
Any information on software or encoding problems and the expenses would be quite helpful.
