Afaik, "Arena" as episode of ST was a fully legal, if very poor, adaptation
of the Fredric Brown short story.
Whereas Ellison's "Soldier" on OUTER LIMITS was seen as arguably enough
ripped off by THE TERMINATOR to lead to a settlement including a credit line
for Ellison in all future releases of the film.
Glad you followed Brown's work over here...did you ever develope a taste for
Mack Reynolds?
Jeff--They did "Arena" on OUTER LIMITS, as well? Shall have to look for
that one some time (unless you mean OL THE NIHILISTIC GENERATION aka the
color Showtime/syndicated series)...

RE:> As a teenager I was impressed with the Star Trek episode in which
Captain Kirk and the leader of an alien race, the Gorn, are put on a
barren
planet to do battle.
Memory is that Roddenberry stole someone elses (Fredic Brown?) short
story and settled out of court. (Outer Limits did the same thing to
Harlan Ellison.)
Again, the written story is better. Fredric Brown mysteries moved me to
science fiction.
